Do you offer portrait sculpture or full figure workshops?

Most workshops focus on portrait sculpture, with addition classes on torsos, and full figure sculpture.

How do I pay for your workshops and classes?

Tuition can be paid by cash, check, Venmo, or PayPal.

 

Do your sculpture classes use a live models?

Not initially. Students begin by learning anatomy developing gesture, and creating movement and pose from imagination.

 

Live models are used in Full Figure workshops and occasionally used in evening sessions.

Will you teach or speak at our art center or school?

Most of my classes are held at JCLee Studios in Auburn, CA, but I welcome inquiries for guest teaching or speaking engagements. 

 

I’ve never sculpted before—can I still take a class?

Absolutely. My students range from complete beginners to professional artists. Many have never worked with clay before.

 

All sculpting tools, clay, armatures, aprons, and sculpting stands are provided for in-class use.

I provide all tools, clay, armatures, aprons, and sculpting stands for in-class use.

However, I recommend:

• Philippe Faraut tools from pcfstudios.com

• 7” tool (eyes, lips, ears)

• 10” tool (shaping and planes)

• Kemper wire tools, clay scraper, clay knife, and cutting wire.

 

Where can I buy armatures and sculpting stands?

• Both are available at pcfstudios.com.

• Philippe Faraut’s stands are high quality and very reasonably priced.

 

How can I better prepare for class?

• Students who review Philippe Faraut’s books or DVDs often get more out of class.

• Also, familiarize yourself with basic anatomical terms, which I use during instruction.

 

Will my piece be fired after the class?

• Yes. Sculptures take several months to dry fully.

• Firing fees start at $25.  All depending on size.

 

What size will my sculpture be?

• Portraits range from 3/4 to life-size.

• Torso and full figure projects are generally 1/3 life-size during three-day workshops.

 

Can I give a class as a gift?

• Yes! Gift certificates are available.

• See the “Gift Certificate” tab.

• Students must be at least 18, although I’ve made exceptions for mature 15-year-olds.

What kind of clay do you use?

I use a low-fire, white earthenware (water-based) clay without grog.

In California, I use Laguna Clay EM-210, available at:

• Industrial Minerals Company (Sacramento)

• Alpha Fired Arts (Sacramento)

 

Is firing water-based clay necessary?

• Not always. Unfired clay can last for years indoors but remains fragile.

• If you want to preserve the piece, it must be hollowed out and fired.

 

Do you use patinas on fired pieces?

• Yes. I use acrylic paints and metal waxes from Sculpt Nouveau in Escondido, CA.

 

What if my sculpture starts to smell musty?

To prevent mold:

• Mix 4–5 drops of bleach in a spray bottle with water.

• Lightly spritz your sculpture before wrapping it in plastic.

 

What if my sculpture cracks as it dries?

• Hairline cracks are common. To reduce this:

• Dry slowly under loose plastic for several weeks after hollowing.

If cracks occur:

• fire the piece as is

• Then patch with acrylic putty or Hydrocal (plaster)

• Apply patina.
